John Edward Coxe, Jr., D.O., 86, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society in Indianola of Alzheimer’s. He was born in Des Moines on Nov. 8, 1929, to John Sr. and Ruth Gray Coxe. He graduated high school in Gardena, Calif., and attended Los Angeles City College. He served with the U.S. Air Force from September 1948 to September 1955. John graduated from the University of Iowa and Des Moines Medical University. He interned in Saginaw, Mich., and practiced in Dayton, Iowa, and at the Veterans' Hospital in Knoxville. He retired after 29 years. John served as District and then President of the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association. John is survived by his wife, Barbara of Dayton; sons, John III (Janis) of Maryville, Mo., Andrew of Ankeny, Craig of West Des Moines, and Bruce (Treasa) of Ankeny; step-children, Chris (Kim) Skoglund of Guerneville, Calif., Kathy (Larry) Schiller of Rutland, Vermont, Tom Skoglund, Karen Skoglund and John (Denise) Skoglund, all of Dayton; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one son, and his first wife, Elizabeth. Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m., with a funeral service at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines.
