Ardice Leola (Spires) Dhabalt was born October 14, 1925 near Pleasantville, Iowa to Oscar and Lottie (Halterman) Spires. She spent all of her life in the Melcher-Dallas area until the last few years while in a care center in Knoxville, Iowa. Ardice married Irven "Doc" Dhabalt on October 17, 1942. To this union they were blessed with 5 children: Johnnie, Jack, Kenneth, Garland, and Patti.
Ardice was a wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver, and friend. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Melcher-Dallas. She worked at the Overall Factory and later retired from Knoxville Area Community Hospital Dietary Department, where she was the manager.
Doc and Ardice enjoyed traveling every time they had a chance. She enjoyed cooking and would always have Do Dabs (fried bread) ready after a day of the guys cutting wood. She enjoyed the large holiday and family gatherings. She loved watching her talented children and spouses performing a variety of acts at family gatherings.
Ardice was a very strong person. She was caregiver for family members, but especially caring for her own immediate family: Doc, Johnnie, Kenneth, and Garland during their illnesses. She always stated, "children are not to die before their parents.", but she stayed strong and never lost her faith during all these difficult times. She pulled herself from driving and then let her children, Jack and Patti, know when it was time to move to the care center.
She enjoyed seeing the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would wait patiently for reports from the family on results of all their competitions; whether it was swimming, singing, dancing, school sports, debating, motorcycling, and work accomplishments. She went from riding her pony, Cricket, in her married years to obtaining a Harley motorcycle ride with her grandson, Ryan. She was so proud of all of the family members and all their accomplishments. Ardice was a NASCAR fan and a dedicated Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Ardice passed away April 21, 2017 at Westridge Care Center in Knoxville. Preceding her in death were her husband, Irven "Doc"; three sons: Johnnie, Kenneth, and Garland; parents, Oscar and Lottie Spires; brother, Doran Spires; and a sister: Marilyn Spires.
She is survived by her son, Jack (Sheri) Dhabalt of Indianola; daughter, Patricia (Don) Hawxby of Melcher-Dallas; two daughters-in-law, Marsha Dhabalt of Ankeny and Trudi Dhabalt of Indianola; sister, Doris Krpan of Knoxville. Eight grandchildren: Misti & Michael Battles, Rick & Kris Dhabalt, David & Cindi Dhabalt, Sean Dhabalt, Cherise Schrader, Kerry & Brian Kingery, Ryan & Allison Dhabalt, and Heather & Matt Svec; and 16 great grandchildren. Along with brother-in-law, Leonard (Yvonne) Dhabalt; sisters-in-law: Virginia Schneider and Kay Alcantar; and many nieces, nephews, and relatives.
