Barbara's Story

Barbara Jean Bailey was born Feb. 9, 1933, in Des Moines, the daughter of Wentworth and Lula (Oliver) McMains. She attended school and was raised in the Des Moines area. On March 24, 1950, Barbara was united in marriage to Alva John Bailey in Leon, Iowa. The couple lived in Aurora, Colo., and few other locations while John was in the Air Force. They moved to Knoxville following his discharge. Barbara worked at the Knoxville Café for Bill Wolf and then at the County Care Facility for two years. From 1978 until her retirement in 1996, Barbara worked at Pella Corp. In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed flower gardening and driving her Lincoln Continental. She was especially proud of her family and loved spending time with them. Barbara passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 82 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alva John and a brother, Robert McMains. Those left to cherish Barbara’s memory include her children: Steve Bailey (Hollie) of Waukee, Chris Bailey of Knoxville and Paula (Butch) Koons of Knoxville; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Claudia Leaming of Knoxville; half-brother, Gary McMains of Des Moines and many other family members and friends. A Funeral Service was held at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home – Knoxville, on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. with Elder Bill McDonald officiating. Musical Selections were “How Great Thou Art”, “In the Garden” and “Go Rest High on that Mountain”. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery – Knoxville.
