Barbara J. Smith, 82, of Oelwein, Iowa died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 18, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church, Oelwein. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. A memorial fund has been established for Grace United Methodist Church. Online obituary at www.jamisonschmitzfuneralhome.com Barbara Jean Grapes was born April 14, 1935 at Strawberry Point, Iowa the daughter of Floyd Eldon and Beuhla (Starr) Grapes. She graduated from West Central High School. Barbara was united in marriage to Russell DeWayne Smith on March 29, 1953 at the United Methodist Church in Maynard. The couple settled in Oelwein where Barbara was an Avon representative. In 1964, they moved to the Maynard area where they farmed until moving to farm in the Lamont area in 1975. In 1976, they purchased a John Deere Dealership and a farm in Knoxville, Iowa. In 1984, they moved to the Walker area where Barbara worked in the Me Too Grocery Store Deli in Marion. Barbara moved back to Oelwein where she retired from Mercy Hospital. She moved to Arlington Place and then to Grandview Health Care Center. Barbara was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flower gardening, her horses and her dogs. Barbara is survived by her 4 Children: Gary (Denise) Smith of Bussey, Julie (Doug) Ohl of Oelwein, David Smith (Toni Smith) of Pleasantville and Jon (Lynn) Smith of Center Point; 15 Grandchildren; 23 Great-grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Janet Pech of Winthrop and Beverly James of Scottsdale, Arizona; 1 Brother-in-law: Ronnie Hurd of Marion and many Nieces & Nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband: DeWayne on March 31, 1990; daughter: Kathryn Rueber; granddaughter: Shelley Ohl; sister: Sharian Hurd; and 2 brothers-in-law: Billy Pech and Moe James.
