Dale Eugene Hughes

Dale Eugene Hughes was born January 6, 1931 in Prairie City, Iowa the son of Kenneth Albert and Olive Maureen (Kain) Hughes.
Dale was raised in the Percy, Iowa area and as a young man, he worked for local farmers.  He served in the United States Army from 1952 - 1954 and was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.  On January 1, 1953 Dale was united in marriage to Betty Hendrix.  Following his discharge from the Army, Dale worked in the construction business and he and Betty lived in various locations.  They later moved to Redfield, Iowa for 5 years before moving to Knoxville where they have lived most of their married life.  Dale worked for Elevator Contractors, where he built and maintained grain elevators for 25 years.  He helped found Kain Construction and then started Iowa Elevator in Carlisle.  He retired in 1994.
In his spare time, Dale volunteered for the Knoxville Schools music program, driving the instrument truck and trailer for many years.  He and Betty also enjoyed camping and traveling.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially spoiling the grandchildren.
Dale passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 86 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis and brother, Charlie.
Those left to honor Dale's memory include his wife, Betty; children:  Ron, Keith (Denise), John (Lisa), Tim (Kris) and Dave (Jenny); 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings:  Donna (Archie) Willis of Weston, Missouri; Shirley Tuttle of Indianola; Donald (Miriam) Hughes of California and Carolyn (Jim) Jones of Carlisle and many other family members and friends.
Graveside Funeral Services were held at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:15 p.m. with Pastor Brent Hanna, officiating.
Military Honors accorded by the American Legion Baty-Tucker Post No. 168, the V.F.W. John Myers #3519, and the United States Army.
