David's Story

Services for David "Buzz" Willoughby, 83, of Melcher-Dallas were held Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dallas Christian Church in Melcher-Dallas. Family received friends on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Melcher-Dallas. Interment was at the Dallas Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Dallas Christian Church or to the Melcher-Dallas Rescue Unit.
  David Scott Willoughby was born on July 11, 1933 at home in Dallas, Iowa to David Scott and Julia (Dhabalt) Willoughby. He graduated form Dallas High School in 1952. He met his future wife, Shirley M. Dawson at Dallas High School and was married on May 23, 1953. They were blessed with five children: Kenny, Rick, Randy, Rhonda, and Barry.
Dave worked at Maytag in Newton, Iowa for 35 years. He started in dryer assembly and later worked with the union; first as a Shop Steward and later served as the Union President until retiring in 1988. After retiring from Maytag, Dave went to work for the International UAW for a few years and worked as an organizer.
"Buzz", as he was known around home, loved working with and helping people. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Melcher-Dallas athletics, served on the school board, coached Little League Baseball, Little Saints wrestling, and after retirement served on the Melcher-Dallas City Council.
He was a member of the Dallas Christian Church; and served as a Sunday School teacher, youth director, and elder.
Buzz especially loved his family. He took great joy in watching his children and grandchildren play athletics and enjoyed going to all their activities.
He will be remembered as a loving family man and supporter of the Melcher-Dallas Saints and Iowa Hawkeyes. He was someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a hard worker.
Dave passed away December 23, 2016 at Accura Health Care Center in Pleasantville. Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Shirley Willoughby; his children: Kenny (Karan) Willoughby, Rick (Shelly) Willoughby, Randy (Shirley) Willoughby, Rhonda Ohl, and Barry (Julie) Willoughby; 10 grandchildren: Gina, Dina, Jake, Josh, Nathan, Mike, Matt, Kyle, Ethan, and Christian; and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings: Lucille Lathrop, Lloyd (Jean) Willoughby, and Julietta Thomas; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents: Dave and Julia Willoughby; and his brother Leo Willoughby.
