Donald Junior Enfield was born March 12, 1928 in Mahaska County near Taintor, Iowa to John Marion and Essa May Enfield. He went to school in Oskaloosa through the 9th grade. He enlisted in the Army on November 3, 1950. Don married Alice Ferneau on March 10, 1951, the day before he left for overseas serving in the Korean Conflict. He received numerous accommodations including the Purple Heart. Don later received his GED and graduated as a LPN with his wife, Alice in 1968.
Alice and Don were blessed with 6 children: Mitch, Sherri, Greg, Melissa, Teresa, and Robin. Being such a great dad, Don always said he would have liked to have has six more.
Don worked at the Knoxville VA, first in the kitchen, then as a LPN, and finally in the Fire Department retiring in 1992. He also served on the Melcher-Dallas Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years and was a past Chief. He was a member of NARFE, the American Legion, and a life-time member of the Disabled Veterans.
Those who knew and worked with him knew he was a hard worker and was quiet, but ornery. He loved watching sports, wrestling, and was an avid Hawkeye fan. Don also enjoyed watching old westerns. He liked old country music and he and Alice enjoyed several trips to Branson. They enjoyed traveling, camping, and boating; often with family and friends. Cooking was another favorite past time and was great with chili and spaghetti. He liked his coffee and popcorn as well. He loved his Toyotas. They were always fancy, clean, and fast. Everyone knew he liked to go fast and told stories of running moonshine in Georgia as a kid. He loved his dogs and was an animal lover. His greatest love was his wife and family of 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Family holidays and celebrations were very special to him.
Don passed away on September 29, 2016. Preceding him in death were his parents: John and Essa; children: Greg and Teresa; and siblings: Johnny Enfield, Doris White, Maxine Cooper, Dale Enfield, and an infant brother.
He will be missed by his wife, Alice; children: Mitch (Linda) Enfield, Sherri (Terry) Bingham, Melissa (Raymond) Ripperger, and Robin Enfield; 16 grandchildren: John, Natalie, Michael, Eric, Curtis, Shane, Caleb, Carley, Ben, Cameron, Cassie, Dara, Randi, Tim, Travis, and Melissa; 24 great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
