Donald P. Frey, age 75, of Knoxville went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, January 11, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Don was born in Knoxville, Iowa, on October 16, 1941 the son of Harold and Mary Bell (Browne) Frey. Don grew up in Pleasantville and graduated from Pleasantville High School. In the 1960's, after graduation, Don joined the United States Army where he served three years.
Following Don's service in the Army, he drove a maintainer, for 30 years for the Marion County Road Department. Soon after working his retirement he continued to work for the Iowa State Road Department.
Don had many interests and hobbies. One of those interests Don had was his passion was helping pee wee, little league, and Babe Ruth baseball leagues. He served as Little League President and coached several All-Star teams.
Don's other passion was helping with 4H. He especially enjoyed helping his son and many other youths that were involved in 4H showing cattle at the Marion County Fair, Iowa State Fair, National Cattle Congress and many other cattle shows around the midwest. Don was awarded a certificate of Appreciation from the Marion County Beef Association for his 28 years of dedication and excellent service.
Don also enjoyed many years of working and later managing the beer stand at the Knoxville Raceway.
After managing the beer stand, Don and Pat began camping at the North Campground. During their 15 years of camping and years managing they made life long friends.
Don is by survived his wife of 51 years Pat (Crews) Frey of Knoxville, son Donnie Frey (Kim Shives) of Knoxville, one brother Dean (Rita) Frey of North Liberty, one sister Edwina Baker of St. Pete Beach, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Mary Bell Frey.
Visitation for Don was held from 2:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M., Sunday, January 15, 2017, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville. A memorial service for Don was held at 3:30 P.M., with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. A private family burial will be held later date.
A memorial has been established in Don's memory to the Marion County 4H. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Don's family with services.
