Gregory Boyd Rankin, age 66, of Attica, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Gregg was born on April 12, 1950, in Oskaloosa, to Lawrence Boyd and Twila Louise (Little). He graduated from Twin Cedars High School, Class of 1968. While in school he was active in track, football, and 4-H. Following graduation, Gregg enlisted in the United States Army and served six years in the Army National Guard. In 1971, he was united in marriage to Jan Utter, and to this union one child; Jeanna Marie was born. On Jan. 29, 1976, Gregory was baptized and gave his life to Christ. On July 24, 1976, Gregg and Terri Bassett were united in marriage and to this union three children were born, Steven Boyd, Daniel James, and Stacie Lynne. Gregg’s passion was farming alongside his dad. He was a proud owner of a 1969 Camaro that created many good stories to tell. He was a member of Young Farm Bureau and the Marion County Pork Producers. In later years, he worked for Vermeer Manufacturing and Farm Service as an Equipment Operator. He was the first baseman for the Attica Fast Pitch Softball Team for several years. Gregg also played for various other area teams, and coached the Tracy Little League Boys' Rookie, Minor, and Major League teams. Gregg’s many hobbies included deer hunting, mushroom hunting, bowling, various card and board games and riding his Honda motorcycle. Through the years, he loved watching his children in track, baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. His most recent enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father; Boyd Rankin, grandparents, Lester and Flossie Rankin and Thomas “Doc” and Charlotte (Harrison) Little, and brother-in-law; Daryl Clipperton. Gregg is survived by his children; Jeanna (Todd Orris) Wilson, Steven (Bonnie) Rankin, Daniel (Krystal) Rankin, Stacie (Andy) Dunkin; grandchildren, Brooke and Jessica Wilson, Gaige and Carson Rankin, Laci and Ella Rankin, Emma, Hannah, and Addison Dunkin; and great grand-daughter, Brittney Wilson. His mother, Twila Rankin; companion, Jean Hoch, her two daughters; Jennifer and her children; Alex, Chloe, and Josie; and Suzanna and her children; Mackenzie, Makayla, and Maci; two sisters, Beverly Clipperton and Merry Lynn (Tom) Anderson; and several other family members. Visitation began at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 28, 2016, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Gregg’s family was present and the funeral home from 6-8 p.m., Thursday evening. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 29, 2016, at Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville, with Pastor Jeff Comstock to officiate. Military Honors will precede the service.
