Harlan Leonard Pearson, age 87, of Bussey, Iowa, passed away July 9, 2016, at his new residence in Knoxville, Iowa.
Visitation was held from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, July 11, 2016 at Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville; Harlan's family was present from 6:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M, Monday evening.
A Funeral service was held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Zion United Methodist Church in Pershing, Iowa, with Pastor Vickie Steffes officiating. Following services burial will be held at the Zion Cemetery in Pershing.
Harlan was born in Pocahontas County, Iowa on November 16, 1928. He is the son of Carl L. and Ilda LaRue (Johnson) Pearson. Harlan attended Laurens High School where he played high school football. Three months prior to graduating, his father became ill, so Harlan began running the family farm.
On April 22, 1951, Harlan and Betty were united in marriage at the Attica Methodist Church, to this union three children were born; Cindy, Robbie, and Duane. Harlan and Betty raised their family in Bussey, Iowa.
Harlan spent many years of his life farming and working as a Gravedigger. In the 1960's, Harlan began his career at Vermeer Manufacturing where he worked for 30 years, before retiring in 1991. Harlan also enjoyed working with, riding, and raising horses. He participated in rodeos and performed Trick Horse Riding Shows. Harlan also loved music and dancing. Harlan and Betty enjoyed square dancing and country music dancing together.
When Harlan was not riding horses and dancing; he was always up for a game of cards or just being outdoors camping with his family, especially his seven grandchildren. Harlan took great pride in his family and his church. He was an active member of the Zion United Methodist Church.
Harlan is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; Betty (Goemaat) Pearson, two daughters; Cindy (Buck) Pettyjohn of Knoxville, Robbie (Frank) Johnson of Oskaloosa, sister; Honey Lou Wells of Houston, TX, seven grandchildren; Jeff Johnson, Ryan Pettyjohn, Jennifer TenClay, Brett Johnson, Brenda Galassi, Holly Pearson, and Kristen McCombs, two step grandchildren; Bret Pettyjohn, Tanya Beebe, seven great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Harlan is preceded in death by his parents; Carl L. Pearson and Ilda (Johnson) Lynch, and one son, Duane Pearson.
