John Gene De Moss was born on Nov. 25, 1941, at Knoxville. He was the fourth of eight children that were born to Tommy Roy and Clara M. (Bailey) De Moss, Sr. John attended the Washington Country Grade School in rural Marion County, through the eighth grade. He grew up in the Red Rock and Knoxville area. John worked on the farm with his Dad and brothers through the age of 21. John drove semi over the road for 51 years. He was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard and worked in the transportation units. He retired as a sergeant after serving for 28 years. John also volunteered in 1990 to be deployed with the National Guard unit out of Mason City that was being deployed to Iraq. John served nearly one year during Operation Desert Storm. In 1969, he and Glenna Ray Garrison were united in marriage and to this union three sons were born: Christopher John, Justin Garrison and Tyler Gene. John continued his lifelong passion as an over the road trucker while Glenna worked full time at the phone company and maintained their home. In 1998 he and Carol Byers were united in marriage. John had an avid interest in tractor pulling and hunting just because he was spending time with his boys. On Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19, 2015, he passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, at the age of 74 years, eight hours following the death there of his mother, Clara. John is survived by his wife, Carol G. De Moss; his three sons: Chris and Diana De Moss of Pella, Justin and Stacy De Moss of Cedar Rapids; Tyler and Cassie De Moss of Knoxville; seven grandchildren; a step-daughter, Rhonda and Daniel Humeston of Knoxville and their three children; and the following brothers and sisters: Tommy De Moss, Jr. of Knoxville, Dortha and Don Borts of Sigourney, Iowa, Sharon and Rodney Dykstra of Columbia, Iowa, Danny and Pam De Moss, Mary and Bill Harrington, and Rita De Moss all of Knoxville. John was preceded in death by his father, Tommy De Moss, Sr. on March 29, 2007, his mother, Clara De Moss , his brother, Floyd De Moss , and a sister-in-law, Jeanette (Tommy) De Moss, Jr. A Joint Funeral Service was held on Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. at Celebrate Community Church, Knoxville. Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville handled arrangements.
