Kenneth Rayl died on his 85th birthday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Mercy West Lakes in West Des Moines. He was born in 1930 in Grinnell, attended area schools and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1948. He was a veteran serving in the Army from 1950 - 1953. Mr. Rayl was united in marriage to Virginia Laymiller on Nov. 4, 1951. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering and worked with the Corps of Engineers on the Red Rock Dam for seven years, then with the Veterans Administration in Knoxville, Iron Mountain, Mich., Iowa City, Brecksville, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pa. He retired as the Associate Director at the Knoxville VA Hospital in 1986. He served on the Marion County Fair Board for 18 years from 1987 - 2005. He enjoyed woodworking in oak for many years following retirement. He is survived by his wife, Virginia and children, Rita Harkins, Brandon, Miss., Cindy Douglass, Collierville, Tenn., Jeff Rayl, Crystal Lake, Minn., Lisa Mueggenberg, Waukee,, a sister, Dorothy Hall, Brooklyn, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Ione Rayl of Searsboro and brother, Willis Rayl of Canaan, Conn. The body has been cremated and the deceased requested no flowers or donations.
