LeRoy Dean Kaster, 73, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in the early morning hours. LeRoy died from a traumatic head injury after a fall slipping on a patch of ice.
A memorial service will be held 11 am Thursday, February 15th at Oakwood United Methodist Church 400 NE 56th in Pleasant Hill, where he has been a member for several years. Private burial will be at a later date. After death he will continue to help others by donating to the Iowa Donor Network.
LeRoy was born in Knoxville, March 28, 1944 to Harold Dean and Janace Irene (Rowland) Kaster. He attended school in Dallas where he graduated high school May 22, 1962. He was married and later divorced from Bonnie Shives Kaster. To this union two children were born, Douglas LeRoy and Kimberly Ruth. Later in life he married Linda (Medearis) Gonzalez on July 4, 1998 and gained two step daughters.
An ambitious young man LeRoy started working at the age of fourteen, at various jobs starting with working on a sheep farm. While attending school he managed to help out on the family farm and also work at a local garage where he developed his skills to become a self-taught mechanic. As an adult he held positions at Mercy Hospital, John Deere, Massey Ferguson, A.M.F. ending with 35 plus years at Fawn Engineering where he retired but was sometimes called back to help with training new personnel. During his first retirement he was overjoyed to babysit for and spoil the youngest grandchild until she went to school fulltime.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. Watching grandchildren at their many soccer and softball games and other school activities. In his younger years he spent many hours working on cars in his backyard garage, passing on a lot of his skills to his son. Later he set up a woodworking shop and became very skilled. He built many beautiful pieces that he gifted to family and friends. LeRoy was "that guy" who woke everyone up early on snowy mornings so he could clear out half of the neighborhood driveways. He was the go to guy for anyone who ever met him; "Papa can fix it!"
He is survived by his wife of nearly twenty years, Linda; children: Doug (Melanie) Kaster, Kim Kaster (Paul) Knode, Angie (Don Liggett) Gonzalez and Tisha Gonzalez Webb; grandchildren: Joslynn Kaster Sullivan, Jenae Kaster, Ethan Kaster, Nate Bell, Kristen Webb, Camryn Webb, Emma Webb and Izzy Webb; three great grandchildren: Lee, LaKoda and Brooklynn; sister, Jeanettie (Ernie) Hill; many nieces and nephews; and his BELOVED dog, Riley. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents.
