Leta Nichols

Leta LaVonne (Agan) Nichols passed away on July 12, 2019, at Knoxville Area Community Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa. She was born on November 30, 1923, on a farm in Monroe County, Iowa. Leta was the oldest daughter of Raymond and Ferne (King) Agan. At the age of four, she moved with her family to a farm in Marion County, Iowa and spent the rest of her life in the Columbia/Knoxville area. Leta completed her elementary education at Elm Grove School. Due to health problems, she was unable to go on to high school until five years later. She then graduated in three years with the Knoxville Class of 1946. The Superintendent told Leta it would take her four years to complete the requirements for graduation. She was very proud of her ability to prove him wrong and continued to share the importance of education with her children. After graduation she worked as a book keeper at Gambles.
On January 3, 1948, she married her long time friend Robert Lee Nichols. They spent over 60 years on the farm and were privileged to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary prior to his death on July 13, 2008. Along with her duties of being a farm wife, Leta worked at Collins Memorial/Knoxville Community Hospital as a patient account manager for 25 years. Leta and Bob raised large gar-dens and participated in the Farmer's Market. Leta was known for her jellies, jams, and green/red pickles. Leta and Bob were long time members of the Marion County Cattlemen Association and United Methodist Church. They were a grilling "team" at many community events. Leta also loved to sew, cook and raise flowers. In 1993 she was the Hospice Volunteer of the year.
