Lloyd Carl Thornburg
Lloyd Thornburg, 69, of Ottawa, KS, formerly of Pleasantville, IA, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 of ALS (Lou Gehrig disease) in Osawatomie, KS.
Lloyd was born in Knoxville, IA on April 17, 1947 to Florian and Olive (Burnham) Thornburg. Lloyd graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1966. In high school, Lloyd was an All-State basketball player. He was elected to the Iowa High School Basketball Hall Of Fame in 2014. Lloyd played college basketball at Centerville, IA and Washburn University in Topeka, KS.
Lloyd was an outstanding high jumper. He won two state indoor high jump titles and a Drake relay high jump title.
Lloyd was raised on a farm and he was close to it all of his life. He was fond of cattle and raised several head from time to time. He was a lover of the outdoors. Lloyd was good with a chain saw and cut a lot of firewood.
Lloyd ran a hog buying station in Albia and Olin, IA, and in Princeton, KS. He was also a traveling salesman and a dump truck driver.
Lloyd is survived by his children, Jennifer (Greg) Elliott of Olathe, KS, Joe of Arkansas City, KS, Brandie (Scottie) Wright of Oskaloosa, KS, and Shelby of Ottawa, KS. Sisters, Shirley of Des Moines and Janet (Tom) Drake of Des Moines. Brother Robert (Gigi) of Windsor Heights and nieces, Julie (Dave) Kain of Hartsdale, NY, Niki Drake of Ankeny and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Elise, Brodie, Allie, and great nephew Rye.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his father, Florian Thornburg, step-father, Emile Thornburg, his mother Olive and his wife, Sandy.
A Celebration Of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 2:00 until 4:00 at the Pleasantville Events Center (old gym) in Pleasantville, IA.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasantville American Legion or the Pleasantville High School Athletic Association.
