Martha's Story

Martha Elizabeth (Sherwood) Shivvers, age 101, of Knoxville passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at the Westridge Nursing Specialty Care in Knoxville.
Visitation for Martha was held from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, February 4, 2017, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Martha's family was present Sunday evening from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 6, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. Burial to follow at Lincoln Cemetery.
Martha was born February 13, 1915 to John Wesley and Effie (Haines) Sherwood of the family farm Southeast of Knoxville. Martha attended the country school, and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1931. She attended Simpson College followed by teaching at Victory Country School and North Flagler Country School.
In 1935, Martha married Woodrow Shivvers. They were blessed with four children: Melvin, Douglas, Katherine, and Barbara. The family lived in Knoxville and later Pleasantville where Martha's activities and interests centered on her church and family. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Knoxville and then Fairview Disciples of Christ in Pleasantville. She loved her children's activities, her gardening, cooking, doing family genealogy, quilting, and reading. After rearing her children, Martha worked in Des Moines for 13 years at Central Life Insurance Company. Upon her retirement, she worked for two years as an assistant librarian at the Knoxville Public Library.
Writing both poetry and prose had always been an important part of Martha's Life. She wrote a column "From Here and There" for the Knoxville Journal Express and the Marion County News. She had poems published by the National Amateur Press, Fossils Magazines, and Lyrical Iowa, many of them receiving Laureate Awards. In addition, several of Martha's devotionals were published in "The Upper Room" and "The Secret Place". She was a member of DAR, National Amateur Press Association, United Amateur Press Association and The Fossils.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband Woodrow Shivvers; her parents, John and Effie Sherwood, daughter-in-law; Carol Shivvers, brothers, John Wesley, Kermit, Bob, and Bill Sherwood and sister, Mary Mae Jordan.
She is survived by her children: Melvin (Linda) Shivvers, Douglas Shivvers, Katherine Cable, Barbara (Ted) Schnell. She is also survived by her six grandchildren; Eric (Amy) Shivvers, Damon (Kari) Shivvers, Dianna Shivvers, Kathy Lynn (Don) Inkster, Joseph ( Laura) Cable, Alan (Shannon) Cable; fourteen great grandchildren, two sisters; Frances Kirkwood and Nora Lea Ingle, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established in Martha's memory to the First United Methodist Church KNIA Radio Ministry, Knoxville Public Library, or donor's choice.
The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville assisted Martha's family with services.
