Mary's Story

Mary Evelyn Stanley, age 95 of Knoxville, passed away on Sunday afternoon, August 13, 2017 at the West Ridge Specialty Care in Knoxville.
Visitation for Mary will be held from 10:00 A.M., until 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 18th, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home with Mary's family present. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville, IA. Burial will follow services at Smyrna Cemetery in Clarke County, Iowa.
Mary Evelyn (Lee) Stanley was born May 10, 1922 in Saline County, Missouri to Howard Clark and Mary Edna (Norvell) Lee. She attended and graduated from Gilliam High School. Following high school Mary attended Missouri State Teachers College for two years.
She taught Elementary until meeting the love of her life, Homer Verlin Stanley. On June 29, 1947 Mary and Homer were united in marriage, with this union came three children; Howard, a daughter in infancy, and Sandra.
After the birth of their children, Mary stayed at their home raising their children for several years. They moved to Allerton where Mary began work as kitchen help in Corydon and later moved to Knoxville where she worked as a Home Healthcare Assistant. Being a caregiver and a teacher was her calling, and she enjoyed teaching children and caring for others. Mary found this to be very rewarding. Mary and Homer shared over 59 loving years of marriage before his passing.
In her spare time, Mary liked to read, cooking and canning, Knitting, sewing and being active in her Grandchildren's events. Mary enjoyed being an active member of the First Baptist Church.
Mary will be missed by her children, daughter Sandra Dabb of Knoxville; daughter-in-law Terri Stanley of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Wallace, Jenna Dabb, Jeffrey (Robyn) Stanley, Brandon (Rachael) Stanley, and Tyler (Tarea Hale) Stanley; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Edna Lee; husband, Homer Stanley; one son, Howard Stanley; and one daughter in infancy.
