Susanna's Story

Susanna Martha (Whitten) McCombs- Swank, age 90 of Knoxville, Iowa died Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Hospice Comfort House of Pella.
Visitation for Susanna was held at 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville. Family was present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Funeral services for Susanna were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. Immediately following the service, burial was held at Bellefountaine Cemetery in Tracy.
The daughter of Clyde Oral and Ethel Fredetta (Long) Whitten, Susanna was born October 7th, 1926 in Carlton, Kansas. Susanna moved with her family to Iowa, where she worked for a short time at a button factory in Muscatine. They later moved to Tracy, were she graduated from Tracy High School. After high school Susanna attended AIB and then in 1945, went to work at Wright Airforce Base in Dayton, Ohio. Susanna returned to Iowa and worked at Rolscreen until 1951.
On May 21, 1951 Susanna and Marion Cecil McCombs were united in marriage in Glenwood, Iowa. They shared 27 years together before Marion's passing on March 19, 1978 and were blessed with six children: Wayne, Fred, Martha, Joan, Tina, and Kyle. Susanna was a farm wife and homemaker for her family. She was an excellent cook, baker, gardener, and canned for many years. Some of her best treasures were her gifts of handiwork, including toys, quilts and handmade gifts.
Susanna later went back to work was employed with Gross Galesburg Sewing Factory of Chariton. She also worked from 1977 to 1978 and 1981 to 1993 at Westridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
In July 1996 Susanna was united in marriage to William "Bill" Swank in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They enjoyed five years of marriage before Bill's passing on January 3, 2001.
Susanna loved her family and later in life traveling all over the United States and abroad. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Susanna is survived by her children Wayne McCombs and wife Sybil, Fred McCombs and wife Susan, Martha Billings, Joan Pickens and husband Bill, Tina Maddison and husband Phil, and Kyle McCombs and wife Rhonda Mason; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and one on the way. Susanna is also survived by her brother William Whitten, and many other relatives and friends. Susanna was preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Ethel Whitten; her husband Marion McCombs and husband Bill Swank; son-in-law Adelbert "Bill" Billings; two grandsons, Darin McCombs and Gregory Maddison; one sister Peggy Culver; and two brothers, Jack and Frank Whitten.
A memorial has been established in Susanna's name to the Pella Hospice Comfort House.
