Thomas's Story

Text size

Thomas Jefferson Schrader was born on July 30, 1928, south of Galesburg, Iowa. He was the oldest of three children born to Robert and Myrtle (Kingery) Schrader. Tom received his education attending country grade school near Galesburg and Pershing, Iowa. Tom became a farm hand, helping farmers in the Pershing area until he enlisted in the United States Army. He was inducted into service on October 18, 1948 and served his country honorably until his discharge on June 16, 1952. During this time he married his love Bonnie Mae Wooldridge on December 29, 1951. To this union five children were born: Thomas Jefferson Jr., Richard Lee, Judith Ann, Diana Kay and Michael Ray. In 1952, they sustained a devastating house fire and lost everything. In 1954, he moved his family to a farm at Nepas Corner, near Dallas, Iowa, and maintained this farmstead the rest of his life. Tom worked construction for CL Carroll and later became employed with the City of Knoxville. He worked in the waste management area and did so for over 20 years until his retirement in 1995. Tom's real passion was for farming, especially with John Deere equipment. Tom dearly loved his old green tractors! He also found enjoyment in camping, playing cards and mushroom hunting. On June 15, 2001, Bonnie passed away at the age of 67. Tom continued to live at Nepas Corner until his health started to decline. Tom passed away on January 31, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Center in Indianola, Iowa shortly after becoming a resident at the age of 88.
