Lela Christina Pinegar was born in Norwoodville, IA on October 11, 1916 to Robert and Dora Clevenger Pinegar. She was the last living of 14 children who grew up in the Lovilia area. Lela attended country school through the 10th grade.
Lela married Edwin Wallace on March 27, 1933. During the war she worked at the canning factory. She was a homemaker who loved working in her house and her garden, especially mowing. Helping her neighbors with whatever they needed, from laundry to yard work, was her mission. Her grandchildren were always excited to come and stay a week with her. She was always busy. Making divinity candy or sewing clothes for baby dolls and GI Joe dolls were things she will always be remembered for. She loved making quilts and Christmas was a favorite holiday. She was able to stay in her own home until the age of 93. On her 100th birthday, she received the Centenarian Award from Governor Branstad.
Lela passed away at Griffin Nursing Home in Knoxville, IA on June 26, 2019 at the age of 102. She will be greatly missed by her children, Gary Wallace and Linda Whitlatch; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren,18 great great grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Wallace; parents, Robert and Dora Pinegar; and her 13 siblings.
